Col. Sharon Bannister, 79th Medical Wing commander was among four women who spoke on a Women's History Month panel discussion at the Jacob E. Smart Building on Joint Base Andrews, Md., March 23, 2016.
The panel members shared their experiences on why they joined the Air Force and how it shaped who they are today, the changes that have helped propel women forward during their time in service, and the challenges faced and how they have overcome them.
"I used to wonder what to say when asked to speak during women's history month. What does it mean to give a 'woman's perspective' on service? Is it really that different? Then I realized, it is just about sharing my experiences. What I say isn't different...it's just that I'm saying it. I am fortunate to have been raised by a strong Mom who taught me not to define people by labels, but rather realize each person has unlimited potential if given the opportunity and mentorship necessary to achieve more than one believes possible. Diversity is the backbone of all successful organizations, and we need to ensure we're drawing our nation's best from areas we may not have looked before, and most importantly ensuring all get the mentoring they deserve to reach beyond where they believe their potential lies," said Bannister.
